All about Glen Spey distillery
Glen Spey is located in Rothes, Aberlour, Banffshire, in the heart of Speyside. The distillery was founded under the name of 'Mill of Rothes,' since it started its life as an oatmeal mill. Founder James Stuart was a corn merchant, he bought Macallan after selling Glen Spey.
In 1887, it was sold to the Gilbey company of London. They owned it until 1970. Business went fairly well. In 1970, the stills were doubled, though there were not so many official bottlings.
Doonie's Spring is the main water source of Glen Spey. The distillery owns two sets of stills, with 7,500 and 12,000 liter capacity. It has a lantern shape to cause reflux.
Glen Spey still uses purifiers in production. Maltings are unpeated, and acquired from Diageo's industrial maltings. The Glen Spey single malt is aged in a combination of Bourbon, Sherry and Hogshead casks.
