Bladnoch Distillery was founded in 1817 by John and Thomas McClelland. Since then it has been merged and acquired a host of times — suffering the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune and occasional mismanagement. But a few years ago, Australian entrepreneur David Prior bought the entire property — literally lock, stock, and barrels — and has installed all new equipment and is issuing forth releases from inventory and new-make production. Interestingly, it is one of only six remaining Lowland Single Malt distilleries that remain, and it is the furthest south in Scotland.
All of Bladnoch Single Malts are crafted with water from the Bladnoch River and locally sourced British malt. Bladnoch 11 Year Old Scotch Whisky 2020 Release is a typically fruity and honeyed Lowlander that spent over a decade in ex-Bourbon casks. It’s non-chill filtered and it clocks in at a decent 46.7%, releasing flavors of runny honey, apple skin, peppery oak, and delicate florals.
