Breaking convention matters: The most Heavily Peated Scotch on the Planet.

Bruichladdich is one of the most impressive distilleries in Scotland, the World even. It was built in 1881 by the Harvey brothers, who came from a dynastic Whisky family. The brothers had wanted to create a distillery that was the very antithesis of an Islay farm distillery. They built a cathedral-like, state-of-the-art Victorian still house, where they used 6m tall stills, which was unheard of at that time, and way ahead of its time.

Today, the distillery remains pretty much the same as it did over 100 years ago. Their belief is, as the French culinary saying goes, "it is in the oldest pots that the best soup is made". Slow fermentation, slow distillation, in very traditional, wooden vats and huge washes made from towering Douglas Fir.

Some years ago, Late at night, the creative folk at Bruichladdich stumbled, or rather, drammed on an idea, after a dose of their own medicine. They decided the break all norms and create the most heavily peated Scotch Whisky in the World. They wanted to show everyone that the quality of Scotch isn't just a function of its age. Thus, they created the Bruichladdich Octomore, named for James Brown's farm above Port Charlotte, where in days past a distillery produced very heavily peated Whisky. The Octomore 06.1, their 6th edition, was aged for 5 years and has a PPM (Phenols-per-Million) value of 167! For reference, Laphroaig's Quartercask stands at around 50. Absolutely insane, this is a must-MUST-have for peat freaks!

Best whisky I’ve had. This was about $160 in my area and it is just so good! When you first sip it the flavors are so pronounced, it will be something that you have never experienced before with your taste buds! No joke. My favorite whisky of all time is Lagavulin 8 year, but that’s just because it is $90 cheaper than this. But if price were no issue, this is my favorite. It’s just so robust in the flavor profile it’s not even funny. I had no clue that you could get a flavor of eating a piece of burnt charcoal (making it taste so good I want to take another bite) and the sweetest candy you can think of with hints of flavors I’ve never even been able to put a word to. Highly recommend trying this. I’m looking forward to trying the PEAT MONSTER the 6.3 Octomore soon. We will see if it beats this one. The bar is high!
