Bunnahabbain has reestablished their smoky, peated Whisky heritage with their classic Single Malt.
Bunnahabhain Distillery was constructed in 1881 by the Greenlees Brothers on the island of Islay where the Jura peninsula reaches out to meet it across the Sound of Islay. Over the decades, production levels and quality fell. That all changed when Distell Group bought the distillery in 2014 and put things under the direct control of master distiller Ian MacMillan. With Ian’s guidance, Bunnahabbain has transformed itself into a quality-focused operation where the finest quality is job #1 and evils like chill-filtering and artificial coloring are taboo.
Bunnahabbain is one of the rare Islay distilleries that makes peated and non-peated Whisky. Quite simply, in Scot’s Gaelic the word “Mòine” means “peat” — as in the peat smoke used to dry the malted barley — and identifies their peated offerings. There is an entire line of Mòine Single Malts with various finishes and aging regimens. But the Bunnahabhain Mòine we are talking about here is the core Single Malt lightly peated, and aged in a combination of ex-Bourbon, ex-Sherry, and Red Wine barrels. And even though this is the core Spirit of the peated line, it ia bottled at a very pleasant 46.3% ABV.
