An unusual Irishman.

The Cooley Distillery was established in 1987 by John Teeling and was then the first new distillery set up in Ireland in over 100 years. The distillery enjoys a great location for Whiskey production due to its access to clean pure water from the Slieve na gCloc river. They use column and pot stills, allowing them to produce both malt and grain Whiskey.

Connemara Peated Cask Strength is the only Irish Whiskey to be produced from its natural strength – 57.90% ABV. Natural and undiluted, the Cask Strength is not chill filtered or coloured in any way. It is double distilled – not three times like most Irish Whiskey.

You do get the alcohol in the ...

You do get the alcohol in the aroma as expected, but earth and smoke are present as well along with some sweetness. You get the peat and some malt and fruit in the flavor, but the combination along with the cask strength makes my lips and tongue vibrate. Small sips are in order for this one. A dash of water doesn't change the taste much. While not usually recommended for single malts - this might be best over an ice cube as it lets things mellow out. I have had the Connemara 12 Year before, and recall enjoying it more - in the future I'll stick to that one.
