THE Amaretto recipe from the 16th century.

Once upon a time, an innkeeper in Saronno, Italy, made a flask of an amber-colored Liqueur as a gift for a certain Bernardo Luini, a famous Renaissance painter and one of Leonardo Da Vinci’s pupils who used her as a model for a fresco of Virgin Mary. By steeping apricot kernels in Brandy, the woman unknowingly procured the first Amaretto Liqueur. In 1600, Giovanni Reina found the innkeeper’s recipe for Amaretto and guarded it closely as a family secret that was passed from generation to generation for centuries. It was Domenico Reina who shared the recipe with the world when he opened up a shop in Saronno in the 20th century and started making Disaronno Originale.

Coming in a glass decanter designed by a craftsman from Murano, Disaronno Amaretto is based on that same time-honored recipe. Crafted from apricot kernel oil, caramelized sugar, and several herbs, spices, and fruits, the flavor profile is packed with signature bittersweet and nutty notes. Sip it neat, on the rocks, or mix it up in a cocktail with cola, ginger ale, or fruit juice. You can also use it to make Tiramisu.
