Ezra Brooks, conceived and forged in Kentucky, has been making happy hours happier with bona fide American Bourbon since the King sang about loving too much (it's 1957). The brand was created by Frank Silverman in Lawrenceburg until the business went under in the 1970s. In 1993, Luxco reanimated the beloved Whiskey-maker and moved it to Lux Row Distillers in Bardstown. The amber Spirit is born in a 43-foot custom copper still, and it ends up in new charred oak barrels at 125 Proof max. Although its older brothers boast about tradition, Ezra Brooks had a couple of cameos in Hollywood: there's a billboard in The Sting with Newman and Redford, while Gary Oldman grabs a bottle of Ezra Brooks in Léon. It's a true American star with real roots.

Ezra Brooks Black Label Bourbon is a well-balanced, award-winning 80 Proof daily sipper sourced from Heaven Hill. They’re keeping its age a secret, but we know the mash bill: 78% corn, 12% rye, and 10% malted barley. As all Ezra Brooks juices do, this Bourbon went through the Lincoln County Process (charcoal filtering) to emphasize the character of the charred white oak barrel. It’s excellent as a daily tipple, a reliably good cocktail base, and a gateway Bourbon for those guests who usually sip on something else (for some reason). Fantastic value, we tell ya!

Personally, I think I’m not ...

Personally, I think I’m not as much of a fan of Whiskys that are too sweet. I appreciate the sweetness that comes from fruity flavors but just sweet is just not quite my pallet. still not bad, but reminds me of Jack Daniels I think (please don’t quote me on that, I don’t drink it any more because of an eventual night with a bottle of Jack and Jack rabbits, haven’t touched it in 10 years).

All in all, not bad. But it’s not really making me want to pour another glass like day 4’s selection did.

Back on track with the advent ...

Back on track with the advent calendar and trying out day 5’s selection.

Rye fills the nose when you first smell it but you can catch the sweetness in the aroma too. When you sip it the spice isn’t too bad but the sweetness of it is very noticeable. You can catch the scent and taste of honey in it as well mostly at the end notes.

Drop a cube of ice in it and it mellows out the rye well. It really accentuates the sweetness of it. To be fair it’s not sweet and flowery like day 1’s sample.
