Riesling-infused Gin. Plus 30 botanicals.
The producers behind this German Gin came together from varied educational backgrounds and different disciplines. Andreas Vallendar comes from a family with a long tradition of distilling fine spirits. His Avadis Distillery is a modern bonded distillery with an awareness of tradition and innovation. Dorothee Zilliken has been running the VDP Forstmeister Geltz-Zilliken estate after successfully completing her studies in viniculture, viticulture and oenology. Their estate has been producing award-winning wines for more than 270 years. The fruity and sweet Riesling produced on this 11 hectare vineyard are fully matured in wooden casks and stored three storeys below ground. Combining the know-how in wine making and the Avadis Distillery history of producing high quality spirits made it a perfect match to produce this out-of-the-box Gin.
Ferdinand's Saar Dry Gin is infused with more than 30 botanicals (WOW!) taken from the VDP Forstmeister Geltz-Zilliken vineyards located in the tri-border region between Germany, Luxembourg and France. Mixing 30 botanicals in a way that the ingredients don’t drown each other is an astounding accomplishment. And here’s the sweet part, the part where Ferdinand Gin truly shines. Once the distillation is over, Andreas rounds-off the spirits with a precise measure of Schiefer Riesling. This adds semi-sweet flavours, resulting in an elegant and fruity character radiated throughout the Gin. Whilst the juniper is present, it is not dominating, but more subtle, thusly Ferdinand Gin will fit those who want to break conventions. And broke conventions it has indeed.
List of Botanicals:
Along with the basic ingredient of juniper, other regional ingredients such as sloe, rosehip, angelica, hop blossom and rose are equally important constituents. We round off our gin with exotic botanicals such as almond shell, coriander and ginger.
SmartAss Corner:
Ferdinand’s Saar Dry Gin owes its name to the royal Prussian District Forester Ferdinand Geltz, the historical figure who also co-founded the VDP Mosel-Saar-Ruwer Zilliken estate.
