Sherry, Sherry baby, can you come out tonight?
Distilling in the Kintyre Peninsula dates back more than 400 years to 1609. In 1832, the Scotia Distillery of Campbelltown became one of the 29 thriving distilleries in the area and the hamlet quickly became known as "The Whisky Capital of the World". The era of Prohibition and the subsequent emergence of Highland Single Malt dominance, however, ended the reign of Campbelltown. Today, the number of distilleries in the area is back up to 3. Reopened in 1933 as Glen Scotia and changing hands multiple times, the historic distillery was acquired by the Loch Lomond Group in 2014 in an effort to recreate the magic of Campbelltown’s bygone era, and they are doing a darned good job of it too.
Recently, the wizards at Glen Scotia unveiled a new 11YO Sherry Double Cask Finish expression. Originally matured in premium, first fill ex-Bourbon barrels, this unpeated Single Malt happily marries the best of Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso Sherry in combination of first fill Hogsheads. An intriguing menage a trois, this one, with the combination of casks accentuating the fruit characters, balanced with the beloved characteristics of Campbeltown. Bottled at cask strength, the rich velvety moutfeel is guaranteed to melt even the toughest Whisky critic's heart. Now excuse us, we'll be singing the 1962 The Four Seasons #1 hit all night long in the company of this limited edition bottle.
