Glenfiddich’s fourth experiment has been one of their most popular drams — a half-peated Single Malt finished in Rum Casks taking "smoky-sweet" for the win.

The famous Glenfiddich Distillery was founded by Scotch Whisky legend William Grant in 1887 with used equipment acquired from the Cardhu Distillery. Remaining in the hands of the Grant family to this day, Glenfiddich is the biggest selling Single Malt Whisky worldwide and can be found in quality pubs from Berlin and Beijing to São Paulo and San Diego. Not only are they a top producer of premium Single Malt by volume, they are a much honored and loved go-to Speyside of choice for millions of loyal fans.

While Glenfiddich is best known for its sweet, mild Speyside Single Malt, they have been experimenting with flavorful combinations and even peated Spirit since 2003. Glenfiddich Fire & Cane is officially the fourth edition in their "Experimental" range. It is comprised of their rare, peated Single Malt combined with their signature fruit-forward Single Malt — both aged in ex-Bourbon casks. The Spirits are married and finished in ex-Rum casks from South America and bottled at 43% ABV. The name "Fire & Cane" makes sense now, right?

Appearance / Color
Antique Gold

Nose / Aroma / Smell
You can smell the smoky peat immediately, but it is a gentle whiff of the wind over aromas of apple, flames orange zest, butter toffee, and oak spices.

Flavor / Taste / Palate
The palate follows the nose, opening with the smoky notes and then a crispy-baked cinnamon apple pie with more brittle toffee, and a hint of salted granola.

Finish
The finish is medium length with the smoky-sweet profile staying on.

I’m not a huge scotch fan generally, but this sounded interesting. It’s a bit smokier than I thought it would be, and a little less sweet. It pairs really nicely with chocolate and cherry though, which bring out the sweetness.
