A superbly tasty, award-winning — and a bit mysterious — blended Whisky from Heaven’s Door.
In 2018 Bob Dylan registered the trademark for "Bootleg Whiskey", setting in motion a series of events that would lead him to collaborate with Master Blender Ryan Perry and Marc Bushala. The first is an experienced Spirit-crafter who cut his teeth on new & used cask programs for various Spirits under some of the largest producers, the second the entrepreneur behind Angel's Envy Bourbon. In early 2018 they cut a deal to craft a line of Bourbons in collaboration with the famous poet, troubadour, folk-rock music hero, and Nobel Prize winner. This is how the "Heaven’s Door" line of premium Spirits came to be. And unlike many-many other so-called "celebrity brands" that are all marketing hype, it has won over 40 medals along with a bunch of other accolades — presented in stunning artistic bottles.
The editor of Spirit Journal gave it Five Stars — his highest recommendations. It took Double Gold last year at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. At the London Spirits Competition it was awarded Whisky of the Year. Shall we go on? Heaven’s Door Double Barrel is a blend of three very different Whiskeys. And no, they won’t tell anyone which Whiskeys are in there. But when we take a sip it feels like a couple of Bourbons and a Rye — all of them high quality. And since this is a Double Barrel Spirits, that means that they take those three mysterious Whiskeys, marry them together, and then finish the blend in new toasted oak for nearly another year. And the taste is worth the extra wood. Thankfully, they bottle it at 50% ABV so you get to taste it all.
Smartass corner:
Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” was used in the soundtrack of the film “Pat Garret and Billy the Kid” and released as a single in 1973. It was a world-wide top-ten hit and has been covered by dozens of bands since then.
Appearance / Color
Warm Amber
Nose / Aroma / Smell
On the nose we get lovely notes of Cracker Jacks, dried berries, marzipan, and vanilla custard with a dash of that toasted oak.
Flavor / Taste / Palate
Once the Spirit hits the tongue, the flavor profile builds upon the aroma by adding warm butterscotch, baking spices, dark chocolate, and plenty of wood.
Finish
The finish is medium length and rich with shortbread biscuits on the back palate.
