The acclaimed, brilliant, well-balanced Rye Whiskey that relaunched the James E. Pepper brand.
We imagine Whiskey-makers to have names like "Angus McSolid" and look like "The Most Interesting Man in the World." The founder of Georgetown Trading Co. — Amir Peay — looks like a Bond villain from the Sean Connery era. That means we have a craft-distilling company making a range of full-flavored, high-quality Spirits owned by someone who just might be an agent of SECTRE. But Amir is a hero in our book for rescuing the historic Pepper name and rebuilding the distillery. Their range of quality brands includes John H. Sullivan Irish Whiskies, the historic James E. Pepper 1776 Bourbons and Ryes, Pow Wow Botanical Rye, and 1776 Napa Valley Wines.
Officially, James E. Pepper 1776 92 Proof Rye Whiskey has "over 90% rye" in the mash bill. We suspect that it is a full 95% with the remaining comprised of malted barley. This is the 46% ABV version of the famous Rye Whiskey that relaunched the Pepper brand and is still the most popular Spirit they produce. It’s a bundle of non-chill-filtered Whiskey joy and one that has garnered them quite a bit of bling over the years in the form of industry awards and accolades.
Appearance / Color
Medium Amber
Nose / Aroma / Smell
The aroma leads interesting botanical notes of lemongrass, menthol, cedar wood, dark chocolate, and pralines.
Flavor / Taste / Palate
The palate is well-balanced and opens with a thick and viscous mouth-feel and notes of warm roasted nuts — almost pecan pie — and Rye spice with notes of current and blackberry over an herbal toffee base.
Finish
The finish is nice and long with an earthy, spice-filled after-dram.
