The latest edition of Jameson Caskmates finishes their signature Irish dram in IPA casks for a hopping good time.

Back in the late 1700’s Ireland, there was one powerful distilling family in two branches — the Haigs and the Steins. John Jameson was originally from Scotland, but married into the Haig family and moved to Dublin 1777, where he was put in charge of the new Bow Street Distillery. After working hard for years, he eventually acquired the entire operation in 1810 and the Jameson & Son Distillery Company was born. Since then Jameson has become the most recognizable and best-selling Irish Whiskey in the world, delivering over 56 million bottles of golden Irish nectar each year.

We’ve told this story before, but it warrants retelling. The head distiller at Jameson was having a late night conversation with a brewmaster in Cork, Ireland. The two men hatched a plan. Jameson would send over a bunch of empty Whiskey casks and Franciscan’s would use it to mature their barrel-aged lager. Then, he would send those casks back to finish the Irish Whiskey. “Caskmates,” get it? Now Jameson’s has replicated the plan with the Fourpure Brewery in London — using barrels that held their Shapeshifter West Coast IPA for three months to make Jameson Caskmates Fourpure Edition. It’s absolutely delicious neat.

Flavor Spiral TM

Warm Gold

Nose / Aroma / Smell
On the nose the delightful scent of hops joins the classic Irish Whiskey aromas of tropical fruit, marzipan, and gingerbread.

Flavor / Taste / Palate
On the palate the aroma remains, but the flavor of butter toffee holds court over the tropical fruit and apple notes with a nice dose of toasted oak.

Finish
The finish is long and warm and sweet with the hops “hopping” back on the stage.
