Perhaps the most authentic, most traditional Sake we’ve sampled in years with an unmistakable Yoshino cedar note and creamy mouth-feel.

The Kiku Masamune brewery and Distillery is one of the oldest businesses we’ve ever profiled. The company was founded as a Sake maker in 1659 — more than 360 years ago — and that is still all they do. And while most of their business is selling bottles of Sake, they still deliver small barrels of Sake made from rare Yoshino cedar that are highly prized as a status symbol and used for serving large parties on special occasions. This company embodies all of Japanese culture… as they have since the height of the Samurai during the Edo period.

If you want to taste authentic Japanese Sake, you must have Kiku Masamune Taru Sake. It is an authentic dry Sake made from rice and malted rice that is distinguished from other Sakes by the aroma of Yoshino cedar provided by the small barrels used to rest the Spirit. It is regarded by Sake connoisseurs as being exceptional when paired with Japanese cuisine. And unlike lesser Sakes, it can be enjoyed chilled, at room temperature, and warm (nurukan) — delivering unique sensations at each point.

Appearance / Color
Clear

Nose / Aroma / Smell
At room temperature the aroma is rich with cedar tones, a hint of satsuma zest, and just a bit of ginger.

Flavor / Taste / Palate
The palate opens with a creamy mouth-feel and the flavor profile is directly related to the aromas with the additional of a dash of warm starchiness… like fresh sourdough bread.

Finish
The finish is brisk and clean with the wood tone lingering in the nose.
