Twin wood Single Malt perfection made in heaven.

Knappogue Castle was built by MacNamara clan in the 15th century. Left to ruins, when Mark Edwin Andrews — former Assistant Secretary of the US Navy — restored this cultural landmark in 1966. Andrews also loved Irish Whiskey, so he stocked his cellars with the best casks he could get. When they had reached aging perfection, they were bottled under the name of his beloved Knappogue Castle. His son Mark decided to issue releases of his father’s passion to the world, beginning with the Knappogue Castle Vintage 1951 — which became one of the most rare and prized Whiskeys in the World — bar none. Today the passion continues to produce some of the finest independent Irish Whiskey on Earth… just as Mr. Andrews had imagined.

Knappogue Castle 14 Year Old — sometimes referred to at the "twin wood" — is a classic, triple-distilled example of Irish Single Malt perfection. 80% of the Whiskey is aged in ex-Bourbon casks, and the rest is aged in those glorious Oloroso Sherry casks. The two are married and bottled after fourteen years and it is an Irish marriage made in heaven. As you would expect from a Whiskey of this caliber, it is non-chill filtered, has no artificial coloring (bless them), and is bottled at a perfect 46% ABV.

This is why I love Irish whiskey. I am a big fan of the 12 year old, and this has even more to offer and a great value for the price. Ripe tropical fruit, subtle peach, mixed with the typical honey and vanilla sweetness of Irish whiskey, maltiness, slight fresh floral notes, drinks like a crisp white wine, but better, with a nice finish that lingers. I do not like sherry bombs, and this is not overpowering with sherry notes, but has a great balance of the influence of oloroso sherry casks. Fantastic dram! My favorite Irish whiskey is Green Spot, but this may move into my top spot on my favorites list!
