Øutständing Swedish Single Malt with a wonderful twist.

Eight friends from the Stockholm Royal Institute of Technology met for a ski trip in Mackmyra in 1998. Each brought Whisky as a gift for the host, so they started talking about making Swedish Whisky. Lucky for us, they brought the wild idea to fruition, established the company the very next year, and experimented with 170 different recipes. It took them another three years before they found the winning pair of recipes, built the distillery in an old mill in Mackmyra, and started distilling. Their first Single Malt was released in 2006 - and sold out in 20 minutes. The Swedish maverick was born.

Mackmyra Björksav is a Swedish Single Malt that celebrates springtime with its floral and refreshing character. The juice matured in three types of casks: ex-Bourbon, Oloroso-seasoned American oak barrels, and Swedish/American casks that used to hold birch sap Wine from Grythyttan. The wine is basically fermented tree sap mixed with water, sugar, and lemons. Björksav is a marvelous testament to innovation, craftsmanship, and collaboration. It will surprise you, we promise.

So it’s near the end of March now, boy am I way behind on my advent calendar! Day 18, and it’s a bit floral but not too bad. I haven’t liked most floral whiskeys but this one is pretty good. The spice and vanilla notes come out well to me but I’ve lost my touch with finding my other notes. I went ahead and dropped an ice cube into after the first sip. I just really prefer my samples with one rock rather than neat. It helps me find the honey and woody flavor hiding under some of the stronger notes.

Spices and cedar for me, smooth but robust, would make a superb Manhattan, definitely a producer I'll be looking out for.
