Michter’s Whiskey was born out of abundance. The story begins in the 18th century when a Swiss Mennonite farmer settled near Pennsylvania’s Blue Mountain Valley and started harvesting grains – he was soon faced with a pleasant problem as he had too much of them, so he decided to distill them into Whiskey. But it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows for America’s first distilling company, especially during the lovely Prohibition times when they were forced to shut down. Then, in the 1990s, Joseph J. Magliocco and Richard Newman decided to resurrect the brand with the original "cost be damned" mindset they apply to every step of the production process.
Michter's US*1 Unblended American Whiskey is aged in a unique way – unlike Bourbon or Rye that must be aged in new oak barrels, this special dram is rested in Whiskey-soaked barrels. What this results in is a rich and unique flavor profile that could be described as just right. The 'unblended' distinction also means it's never made with grain neutral Spirits. Bottled at a very pleasant 83.4 proof, expect deep butterscotch and vanilla notes with hints of caramel and dried fruit. Only very small batches are available after a nearly 3-year drought during which this rare find was absent from the market.
