Far out, mon! Who knew the Rocky Mountains could whoop up an award winning Dark Rum worthy of a Jamaican beach?
Montanya Distillers jumped into existence in 2008, the brainchild of Karen and Brice Hoskin as a little industrial shop in Silverton, Colorado. What could possibly have convinced these two that they could actually start producing Rum? I mean, Silverton is nice and all, but with a population of less than 700, who’s going to buy their Rum? And Silverton is not a beach in the Caribbean amidst sugar cane fields, it is a sleepy mining town at 9300 feet above sea level and about as far from sugar cane as you can get and not be in. Maybe that high altitude just made them nuts enough to try because it sure did not make sense on paper.
Good thing that no one read the details of that business plan because now, eight years later, they have moved to new facilities in Crested Butte, have a tasting room and bar, and are producing actual award-winning Rum. They started with their Gold Medal winning white Rum and have recently expanded their offering to a barrel aged dark Rum. A Montanya Anejo Rum has been promised coming soon, and they are teasing about creating a variety of wood-finished Rums. Far Out!
Uncle Flaviar just LOVES him a shot with unique character. Seems like we have a nice little example of that right here in Montanya Oro Dark Rum. So, aside from being distilled in the high mountain air, what makes this Rum unique? The first is that they use Champaign yeast for fermentation. Nice touch. This yields their award-winning white Rum that they then age in used barrels from a local Whiskey distiller. That is some solid thinking, right?
The result is a full-bodied Rum that is a great sipper all on its own, but also stands up just fine in a Daiquiri or other Rum cocktail. It’s hard to believe that this Rum comes from high in the Rocky Mountains, and it is so smooth and flavorful that you will be wondering if dreadlocks will look good with that plaid flannel lumberjack shirt you’ve got in the closet.
SmartAss Corner
The finest rums in the world are aged at altitude—not by a beach as one might expect—because the day to night temperature fluctuations force rum into and out of the barrel's oak pores, which makes it smoother & more delicious.
