This could be the best Mortlach Single Malt since 2014.
Dufftown is the Highland hamlet that calls itself the “Whisky Capital of the World.” This little town of less than 1700 people is home to six prominent distilleries — including Mortlach. Founded in 1823 by James Findlater, Mortlach became the first “legal” distillery in Dufftown. The history of Mortlach is an honorable one of tradition, innovation, and engineering—including the famous “2.81” distillation method using multiple still types. Their finely crafted spirits are a core component of the most premium Johnnie Walker blends—so much so that Johnnie Walker bought the distillery in 1923.
One of the most famous and popular releases ever to come from Mortlach was their “Flora and Fauna” edition in 2014. It was a sixteen year-old, Sherried Single Malt produced as a limited run. Mortlach 16 Year “Distiller’s Dram” is also a sixteen — but it’s aged in a combination of first-fill and refill Sherry casks, giving it an even deeper and more complex flavor profile. And a bunch of us think that it is better than the storied “Flora and Fauna” edition, but just hasn’t been discovered by the masses as of yet. So, if you like Mortlach Single Malts, this might be the best one on the market.
Smartass corner:
Dufftown itself used to be named Mortlach back in the Middle Ages — which is how the distillery got its name.
