A really superior blend of Japanese Whiskey from their own distilleries that delivers notes of pastry, fruit, and chocolate all around.
Masataka Taketsuru was the son of a Sake producer. As a young man he was sent to Scotland to learn the secrets of Whisky. He did… but he also learned about love. He met Rita Cowen — a Scottish lass whom he married and took back to Japan with him. In 1934, he founded Yoichi Distillery in southern Hokkaido on a spot surrounded on three sides by mountains — a terrain and climate very similar to the Scottish Highlands. Growing to become the second largest producer of Whiskies in Japan, they opened a second distillery — Mihagikyo — in 1969.
First off, we love the decanter and presentation box for The Nikka Tailored — nothing but modern class. The Spirit inside the lovely bottle is equally impressive. It is a blend of three Whiskies from their two distilleries. There is Single Malt from both the Yoshi and Mihagikyo distilleries, plus a wee bit of grain Spirit from Mihagikyo. The blend is perfectly balanced and bottled at a very nice 43% ABV.
Appearance / Color
Amber Bronze
Nose / Aroma / Smell
The aroma is fruit-forward with apples and apricots leading the way, followed by peach, orange zest, and a hint of milk chocolate.
Flavor / Taste / Palate
On the palate the first thing we thought of was almond bear claw followed by more orange zest, vanilla, orchard fruits, and dark chocolate.
Finish
The finish is medium-to-long with a nice balance of toasted oak with lingering fruit.
