A well-balanced Cognac from Rémy Martin that should be the go-to in your Liquor cabinet.

Charente is an historic town in the Aquitaine region of France — smack dab in the middle of the Grand Champagne Cru of Cognac. As Catherine I rose from servant to Czarina of Russia and Pope Benedict XIII was installed in the Vatican, the House of Rémy Martin was founded on the banks of the Charente River nearly three hundred years ago in 1724.

They began as a trading house run by Paul-Emile Rémy Martin. Today, it’s one of the world’s largest and best-known Cognac houses with a dozen core offerings and many special releases and limited editions.

In 1927, André Renaud — cellar master at Rémy Martin — created the world’s first VSOP Cognac. Today’s version of this classic is Rémy Martin VSOP Fine Champagne Cognac.

Like the rest of the core lineup at Rémy Martin, it’s created from 85% Grande Champagne and 15% Petite Champagne grapes. And as a VSOP, you know that the Spirit has been aged a minimum of four years in new Limousin oak.

If you are going to stock a Cognac in your home bar, this is a great choice. It strikes the perfect balance between cocktail base and well-aged sipper.

Smartass Corner:
The Grand Champaign Cru is a region with large expanses of chalky soil that crumbles in the hand. These are highly prized for Cognac grapes because the fruit grown here ages exceptionally well and develops stronger, more complex aromatics.
