The Rum origins.
Kill-devil, Uproar, Navy neater, Nelson’s blood,... or simply Rum was the drink of choice for seamen from across the World for centuries. Notice the common thread? Visceral and descriptive, these nicknames were coined to represent what it did for those men - it instilled a lack of fear... if not courage.
Behold the History of Rum!
The Caribbean was a sugar treasure trove - it was a great trade commodity - in the 16th Century (Sugar was worth big money back then… Mucho pesetas). The recipe was simple: Grow sugar cane, crush it, boil the juices, drop the residue & possibly do with the slave workforce as you will. The latter was a problem, aye, but the owners were more concerned with the stacking residue back then. God bless the chap who decided to mix the waste - let's call it molasses from now on, shall we? - with leftover cane juice and left it to ferment. And then… magic happened.
Rum spread faster than typhus once it hit the soiled streets of every backwater town in the Caribbean. The World succumbed not long after. Demon Water boosted trade, quelled riots & became a tool for winning elections among other things. But with years came wisdom and Rum - once the swill of the common man and your next door pirate - found its way into the liquor cabinets of the most discriminate of drinkers.
So here it is the selection of Caribbean’s finest Rum representatives that will deliver the true story of their origins and quench the thirst of your inner Pirate, Ayeeee!
Cheers,
The Flaviar Rum Fleet

1) The Caribbean is the World’s heart and soul of Rum making. Virtually every island with a shack or two produces its own distinct Rum style. This heavenly archipelago births 80%+ of the World's total output.
2) Rum (usually) comes from molasses; the sweet and syrupy residue left behind after sugar crystals are extracted from sugar cane juice. Molasses is over 50% sugar, but it also contains significant amounts of minerals and other trace elements, which can contribute to the final flavour.
3) Common Rum classifications: White, Golden or Amber, Dark, Spiced, Añejo and Age-Dated Rums…
4) Mount Gay Rum is the oldest existing Rum company in the World dating back to 1705. This is also the year Guy Fawkes tried to blow up Britain’s Parliament.
5) Did you know that Rum was a go-to beauty product In the 1800s? It was highly revered for its ability to clean hair and strengthen its roots. Wash, soak, rinse & repeat. Second best beautifier? Brandy.
6) Rum production overseer is called Maestro Roneros, or Rum Master. It’s smelling or “nosing”—rather than tasting—the Rum that guides their Rum making decisions.
7) Estimates of Rum consumption in the American colonies prior 1775 had every man, woman, or child drinking an average of 3 imperial gallons (14 l) of Rum each year. Excess or fun times? You decide.
8) Sugar act (American Revenue Act): An act passed by the Parliament of Great Britain which helped the growing movement that became the American Revolution.
