Another winning Single Malt from The Balvenie that turns double-wood aging on its head.
The Balvenie Distillery is just up the road from Glenfiddich on the north side of Dufftown — smack dab in the middle of Speyside. And a young William Grant worked at the nearby Mortlach Distillery for more than twenty years. And when he was ready to start out on his own, he bought an empty field and laid the foundation stone for The Balvenie in 1886.
Still owned by William Grand & Sons, The Balvenie has long been a favorite of Speyside Whisky lovers. It’s famous for producing Single Malts in the classic styles of the region — light, fruit-forward, sweet, and clean without a trace of peat smoke.
In May 2019, the brand released "The Balvenie Stories" — a collection of three Single Malt Whiskies including "The Sweet Toast of American Oak", "The Week of Peat", and "A Day of Dark Barley". Each expression has been designed to represent stories of adventure, endeavor and great craftsmanship.
The Balvenie The Sweet Toast of American Oak is the brainchild of Apprentice Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie. In order to craft a sweeter, fruit-forward Balvenie, she turned their double-wood aging process on its head — taking Balvenie’s classic Single Malt wonder aged twelve years in ex-Bourbon barrels and finishing it in toasted VIRGIN white-oak casks from Kentucky. In a word, the result is luscious … in two words delicate and sweet. Mission accomplished.
