One of the core tenets of Flaviar is bringing novel, ne’er-savored-before flavors to our treasured Community.

Scouring distilleries, rickhouses, and private collections is one way of achieving this—creating spanking new offerings is another.

Flaviar’s Dram Team of flavor curators, trend gurus, and liquor experts keeps their ears to the ground, trying to pinpoint the next big thing: what Flaviar Members love, what beloved beverage we should reinvent—what new craze forge?

The seasoned noses and palates experiment, tinker, fine-tune, and carefully craft fresh takes on ancient Spirits. Flaviar Originals are private bottlings created to move you and make you fall in love with sipping—sometimes with the help of our Members!

In this “House of Flaviar” starter pack, three hand-picked Spirits represent the Club: a superior Armenian Brandy, a badass and passionate peated Scotch with a mission, and a lush tropical sipping Rum. Different genres, same chorus: “You’ve got to try this.”

Shakmat 23 Year Old is a gem of a brandy originating in the birthplace of winemaking. Co-created with Alexis Ohanian, Shakmat draws inspiration from chess, where the wise one does not give up even when held in check. It’s made from four indigenous grape varieties (Kangun, Kakhet, Garan Dmak, and Rkatsiteli) and matured in local Caucasian oak, inheriting an unmistakable flavor profile from the terroir. As you mindfully sip on Shakmat, lavish notes of dried fruits, walnuts, tobacco, vanilla, oak, and black pepper will transport you to a different time and place.

Another dimension-hopping character in this Tasting Box is Son of a Peat III: The Redeemer, the third of its name and the smokiest and punchiest in its lineage. This blend of a dozen Single Malt Scotches hailing from Islay, Speyside, the Highlands, and the Islands was matured in a combo of a hogshead, Sherry butt casks, and ex-Bourbon barrels for up to two decades. Your next go-to peated Scotch will save your palate from dull smoothness with notes of smoke (duh), oak, nuts, and Sherry.

The third dram is all about vacationing and chill vibes. Larga Vida XO Sipping Rum is a tropical concoction patiently matured in oak between 15 and 24 years—getting a lovely finish in a bunch of various wine barrels. Your palate will travel to Barbados, Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Guyana, Jamaica, Mauritius, Panama, Trinidad, and Colombia, all at once, experiencing notes of banana, vanilla, citrus, dates, honeycomb, a hint of smoke, and a sophisticated Cognac-esque finish. (Whoa, there!)

This trio is but the start of your Flaviar journey. Explore the entire selection, and face a conundrum: which one should be your new favorite?!

Smartass Corner:

1) Son of a Peat is a consistently awarded series, with SOP Batch 01 receiving Silver both at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition (SFWSC) and the International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC); Batch 02 winning Gold at SFWSC and 93 points at IWSC; and The Redeemer getting its own Gold in San Francisco and 95 points at IWSC.

2) Speaking of awards, Larga Vida XO 2019 Rum was so adored by the Flaviar Community, it became one of five winners of the 2020 Flaviar Award. The most frequent word used in the reviews was “smooth.”

3) The first time that Armenian brandy really came into the spotlight was at the Yalta Conference in 1945, where Sir Winston Churchill—Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, was offered it after dinner. He was so impressed that he requested to have cases shipped to him regularly. Churchill was a big fan of Armenian Brandy. By his own admission, he had drunk enough brandy to fill three railway carriages.

4) As the first-ever distilled Spirit, Rum holds a special place in the world of alcohol. With its origins in the Caribbean in the 1620s, it quickly became a popular choice for pleasure rather than just medicinal purposes. Despite its long history, the perception of Rum has changed over time, and it is now enjoyed in a variety of ways.

5) In the 18th century, Rum was so highly valued that it was used as a form of currency. Sailors, in particular, were given Rum as part of their benefits package. This shows just how vital Rum was in the past.

6) The perceived flavor of peat in Whisky comes from the level of phenols in the barley, measured in parts per million (PPM). However, using PPM as a measure of smokiness can be misleading because many factors in the Whisky-making process can remove phenols from the final product. As a result, two distilleries using the same peated barley can produce very different-tasting Whiskies.

7) According to tradition, Armenia's first vineyards were planted by Noah on the slopes of Mount Ararat. This, along with the country's fertile farmlands, has allowed the Armenian Brandy industry to flourish. In 1887, Nerses Tairyan established the first wine and Brandy company in Armenia. Twelve years later, Shustoy and Sons, a Russian company, bought the company and became the sole supplier of Armenian brandy to Tsar Nicholas II.
