This signature blended Irish Whiskey from The Quiet Man is a solid, award-winning dram that has a surprising fruit-forward profile.

As a boy, Ciaran Mulgrew would sometimes go to work with his dad at the local pub where he was a barman. As he tells it, while tending bar he would hear stories told by patrons. But he kept those stories quiet as a confessional. He was the Quiet Man. Ciaran has since spent his career in the drinks business and named his Irish Whiskey after his father in this way. The Quiet Man Whiskies are made by his Niche Drinks company which is a subsidiary of Luxco, which as of 2021 is owned by MGP. But Niche Drinks is left alone in Ireland to keep on doing exactly what they have been doing from the start — making great Irish Whiskies and Cream Liqueurs.

The Quiet Man started producing their Whiskies in-house a few years ago. The Quiet Man Superior Blend is made by assembling a blend of pure Irish Whiskies, including their house Spirit. The Whiskies are marring and then finished in first-fill ex-Bourbon casks to allow the Spirt to harmonize — which makes all the difference in the world. It started taking home Gold Medal from its first year of release because it’s just that darn good.

Smartass Corner:
“An Fear Ciuin” is the way to say “The Quiet Man” in both Scots and Irish Gaelic.

If you don’t let this one open up in the glass for a few minutes, you get a confusing floral/fruity/rising bread nose that’s hard to break down into its components. If you let this rest for a few minutes though, it opens up into a much more traditional shortbread and honey profile. Initially, the taste was as confusing as the nose with tastes like rosewater, and other florals in the finish. Once again though, after a good rest in the glass, it became much more familiar and typical for a good irish
