A potent combination of Irish Single Malt and Irish Single Pot Stilled Whiskies finished in Mizunara oak.

Bernard Walsh — co-founder of Walsh Whiskey — set out to rediscover real Irish-style Whiskey as it was made 200 years ago. When Walsh Whiskey first started in 1999, they contracted their distilling to Bushmills. But their success has allowed them to build out their own distillery in Carlow — in the heart of Ireland’s southern farm country — where they make eight versions of The Irishman Whiskies, six Writers' Tears blends, and two varieties of Irish Cream Liqueur.

Writers' Tears Japanese Mizunara Cask Finish was originally a travel retail exclusive created to celebrate the Rugby World Cup that kicked off in Japan last year. It was a strictly limited edition of deliciousness and we got our hands on a few bottles to share. It is a blend of Irish Single Malt and Irish Single Pot Still Whiskies that have aged in ex-Bourbon casks. The kicker is that once married, the Spirits mingle for nine months to finish in rare Mizunara oak casks from Japan. It’s a welcome trip around the world of wood in a single, luxurious Irish dram at a powerful 55% ABV.

*Writers' Tears has recently changed their labels, and as the original labels are being phased out, there is still a chance that you might receive a bottle different than what is pictured. But rest assured, the liquid remains the same, regardless of the label.

Smartass Corner:
"Single Malt" is a distillation of 100% malted barley from a single distillery, "Single Pot Still" also comes from a single distillery, but the mash consists of a combination of malted and un-malted barley.

Appearance / Color
Medium Amber

Nose / Aroma / Smell
On the nose we found ripe apple and pear, nutmeg and clove, vanilla, and exotic wood notes.

Flavor / Taste / Palate
The aroma transcends to the palate with the exotic woods lead in the way — sandalwood, oak, and cedar up front and a party of butter toffee, coconut, and spices on the back.

Finish
The finish is medium length with wood spices all the way down.
