All about Cognac Frapin distillery
Frapin is located in the town of Segonzac, right in the heart of the Grande Champagne cru. The Frapin family has been based in the South West of France since the late 13th century.
Initially, the family was Wine-growers, whom later became distillers, establishing their headquarters in Fontpinot Castle.
The most famous member of the Frapin family was the 16th-century author Francois Rabelais, after whom a prestigious Cognac in a hanging, metal detailed carafe styled after a pocket watch was named: The Cuvee Rabelais.
And, as a nod to history, the Frapin House’s logo is the golden quill.
In 1697, Louis XIV himself granted official nobility to the Frapin family. Today, 20 generations later, the family estate covers 300 hectares in Grande Champagne, 200 of which planted with Ugni Blanc.
The family owns the largest single vineyard in the Grande Champagne. Frapin owns all their vineyards, which are predominantly planted with Ugni Blanc grape variety.
They distill with lees and after the traditional double distillation, a quarter of the liquid is stored in new barrels while the remaining produce goes to the used ones.
Frapin Cognacs are produced small scale, which allows the family to hold quite a generous stock of mature Spirits. And 20 generations worth of experience must count for something, right?
