A powerful and flavorful daily dram perfect over ice.
John Rowan settled in what is now called Bardstown, Kentucky in the late 1700s. He was a local statesman and a judge, and there is an actual Rowan’s Creek that still bears his name running through the distillery grounds — delivering limestone-filtered spring water perfect for Whiskey-making. Rowan’s Creek Bourbon is named accordingly. The Whiskey itself if another small-batch gem from the Willet Distilling Company division of Kentucky Bourbon Distillers (KDB).
Rowan’s Creek Bourbon is a small batch release and one of the most popular Whiskies in the KDB portfolio. The current releases are Non Age Statement, but previous versions were labeled at twelve years and — to our taste — this is not far from that. It has strong notes of maple both on the nose and on the tongue. When this is coupled with the natural granola notes, there is almost the sense of pancake with warm butter and syrup — and that is very pleasant indeed, having twice won the Gold Medal in San Fransisco. And since it’s bottled at a powerful 50.05% ABV, it will stand up to ice and cocktails made nice and makes for a perfect daily dram.
Smartass corner:
John Rowan’s Mansion near Bardstown is said to be the inspiration for the classic song “My Old Kentucky Home” composed by Stephen Foster in 1852.
