Thanks to George Scott Grant who managed to keep most of the stock in the warehouses, Glenfarclass still owns a large variety of expressions. Original bottle expressions starts from 8 year-old to 42 year-old. The Family Casks Series offer single malts from 1952 to 1998 now. In total there were 43 bottlings in 2007. Now the number is increasing by the new years coming regularly.
It is almost impossible to generalize Glenfarclas' Whiskies. However quality conditions in the warehouses with the use of great Sherry casks make sure that Whisky from Glenfarclass will be rich, complex and a big experience for the consumer.
Glenfarclas 15 and 105 Cask Strength are very popular among Whisky lovers, which are claimed to have all the characteristics a good Glenfarclas should have.
Glenfarclas is located on the Rechlerich Farm in Ballindaloch, Speyside. Glenfarclas translates as meaning "valley of the green grass."
Robert Hay built a distillery on the Rechlerich Farm in 1836, and on June 8th 1865, John Grant became the tenant of the farm and bought the distillery.
After he acquired it, George Grant (son of John) and John Smith (cousin of John), became responsible for taking care of the distillery. However, after J. Smith left for the building Cragganmore, George took full control of the distillery.
After John and George died, the company continued with George's sons John and George. During the Whisky boom, they experienced a financial crisis. But somehow, Glenfarclas survived.
A Fourth generation of Grant's came with George Scott Grant, who managed to keep a great amount of casks of the blend Whiskies.
In 2002, John L.S. Grant took charge as the fifth generation, and lastly in 2000, his son George S. Grant joined the company as the sixth generation. Glenfarclas managed to keep the company a family owned brand.
Production in Glenfarclas is traditional. It takes place twenty hours a day, in three shifts. The mash tun is one of the biggest mash tuns in Scotland. The whole process takes about 11 hours. The distillery has 12 washbacks, each having a capacity of 45,000 liters.
There are three wash stills with 29,600 liters of capacity, and three spirit stills of 25,000 liter capacity. Pot stills are heated directly by gas fire. Spanish Sherry casks are the major key in the production of Glenfarclas Whiskies.
